If your business pays for Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard or Premium, you may already have Copilot in Excel without buying the Copilot add-on. As of October 2026, Microsoft's UK Copilot in Excel FAQ lists a Copilot Chat-eligible Microsoft 365 business subscription as one of the plans that gets it. Without the add-on you get standard access, which can be slower or restricted at busy times. The add-on, from $18.35£13.80€16.42A$26.50C$25.94 to $25.70£19.32€22.99A$37.09C$36.32 per user a month excluding VAT, buys priority access and a few extras. For the seven Excel ideas on this site, that means you can try the job for $0£0€0A$0C$0 extra before you buy anything.
What Microsoft's pages show
The Copilot in Excel FAQ says Copilot in Excel needs one of four things: a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription with an AI credits plan, a Microsoft 365 Premium subscription, a commercial Microsoft Copilot subscription, or a Copilot Chat-eligible Microsoft 365 or Office 365 business or enterprise subscription. Microsoft Learn's eligibility list for Copilot Chat includes Business Basic, Business Standard and Business Premium, including the versions without Teams, at no extra cost for people who sign in with a work or school account.
Inside Excel, a label tells you which version you have. "M365 Copilot (Basic)" means you don't have the add-on license but do have standard access to Copilot in Excel. "M365 Copilot (Premium)" means you have the add-on, with priority access.
Microsoft's article on standard and priority access explains the difference. Standard access depends on service capacity, so answers can take longer and some features can be temporarily restricted when demand is high; Microsoft says that isn't an error. Priority access is designed for faster answers and more consistent availability at peak times. The Excel FAQ names one feature that needs a paid Copilot subscription or Microsoft 365 Premium: the model switcher, which lets you choose between Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's GPT models for editing a workbook.
What the add-on costs
Microsoft's UK business pricing page shows Microsoft 365 Copilot Business at $21.41£16.10€19.16A$30.91C$30.27 per user a month on a yearly commitment, cut to $18.35£13.80€16.42A$26.50C$25.94 for the first year on an offer that runs from July to the end of December 2026 for existing customers on an eligible Business plan. Paid monthly, it's $25.70£19.32€22.99A$37.09C$36.32. All prices exclude VAT. The same page sells bundles: Business Standard with Copilot at $24.07£18.10€21.54A$34.75C$34.03 per user a month paid yearly, and Business Premium with Copilot at $32.72£24.60€29.27A$47.23C$46.25.
One caution. The business page's FAQ still lists Copilot in Word, Excel and PowerPoint among the things the paid license adds, while the Excel FAQ gives basic access without it. The two pages describe different levels of the same feature, so the real test is the label in your own Excel and how well standard access copes with your files.

The jobs that suit standard access are the ones that can wait an hour: a monthly look at practice figures, agency spend before a meeting, last term's mock results. The payroll bureau idea is different. Its check runs before each payroll goes to the client, often against a deadline, and if standard access is slow or restricted on payroll day the check doesn't happen. That's the idea where paying for priority access from the start makes most sense.
What to watch for
- Check the label first. Microsoft says availability varies with your license and, for larger organizations, how the tenant is set up, and an admin can restrict Copilot Chat. If Copilot doesn't appear at all, ask whoever manages your Microsoft 365 account.
- Sign in with the work account. Microsoft Learn says people get the enterprise protections when they use Copilot Chat with a work or school account, not a personal Microsoft account.
- Keep personal data out where you can. The care home, home care and tutoring ideas all work from exports with no names, or with ID numbers instead, which keeps UK GDPR exposure low on any plan.
- Check every figure. Microsoft's FAQ says Copilot can make mistakes and advises against relying on it for decisions in sensitive areas such as finance, legal or medical topics. Treat its totals and charts as a draft and check them against the source.
- Don't build a deadline around standard access. It can be restricted when demand is high, so anything that must be done by a set time needs the add-on or a manual fallback.
Where to start
Open a workbook you already review every month, look for the Copilot label, and ask for the analysis the matching idea describes. If the label says Basic and the answers come back in reasonable time, you've saved the add-on. If it's too slow at the times you work, buy one license on monthly billing at $25.70£19.32€22.99A$37.09C$36.32 to test priority access, then switch to yearly billing, $18.35£13.80€16.42A$26.50C$25.94 a month for the first year if you commit before the offer ends in December 2026, once it has paid its way.
