The problem

New plant lines arrive every week in season and each needs a bench sign: what it is, where it likes to grow, how big it gets and the price. If a garden center writes 40 new signs a month at 10 minutes each, that's 400 minutes, 6.7 hours a month.

What the AI does

Copy the facts from the supplier's label or availability list (name, height and spread, sun or shade, soil, hardiness, flowering time, price) into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. Ask for a short bench sign for each, about 40 words, using only those facts, in your center's tone, plus a one-line tip. Check each sign against the supplier label before printing. Don't let it add claims such as 'pet-safe', 'easy to grow anywhere' or 'bee-friendly' unless the supplier or a source you trust says so.

A worked example

A family-run garden center near Evesham takes about 40 new plant lines a month from April to July. A member of staff pastes the week's supplier list into an assistant every Monday and prints the checked signs.

Before

About 10 minutes a sign: 40 x 10 = 400 minutes, 6.7 hours a month

After

About 4 minutes a sign to paste, check and print: 40 x 4 = 160 minutes, 2.7 hours a month

What it's worth

About 4 hours a month saved (240 minutes), worth around $106£80€95A$154C$150 if your time is worth $27£20€24A$38C$38 an hour. Free plans may be enough; ChatGPT Plus is about $27£20€24A$38C$38 a month, so $27£20€24A$38C$38 is the top of the range for one person.

How to set it up

  1. Copy the facts for each new line from the supplier's label or list.
  2. Paste them into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and ask for 40-word bench signs using only those facts.
  3. Check height, spread, aspect, hardiness and price on every sign against the label.
  4. Remove any claim about safety for pets or children, wildlife or growing conditions you didn't supply.
  5. Save the prompt that works so next week's batch is quick.

What goes wrong

  • Assistants get plant facts wrong, such as heights, hardiness or whether a plant is harmful to pets. Only print what the supplier label or a trusted horticultural source confirms.
  • A sign that overstates a plant (for example 'thrives anywhere') can mislead customers; keep claims to what the label says.
  • Prices change; copy them from your till system, not from last year's sign.
  • Free plans have usage limits; batch the week's signs into one session.
