The problem
Nursery managers in England need to know the EYFS statutory framework and the inspection guidance well and keep a folder of policies in line with them. When guidance changes, checking 20 policies against documents of 50 to 100 pages by hand takes a long time. If a manager spends 8 hours a month on this, much of it cross-referencing, that's a day a month away from the rooms and the team.
What the AI does
Claude reads up to 20 files in one chat, with PDFs of up to 1,000 pages, on every plan. The manager uploads the current EYFS statutory framework, the inspection guidance and the nursery's policies, and asks for a table of the framework's requirements against each policy, marking where a policy is missing something or out of date, with page references in both. The manager checks each point at the source, updates the policies and uses the table to plan staff training. No children's, families' or staff details go in, so the personal Pro plan is enough, and a Project keeps the documents together for the next update.
A worked example
A 60-place nursery in Leeds reviews its policies when guidance changes and before inspection. The manager uses Claude Pro to check the policies against the framework and the inspection guidance, then reads each point at the source.
Before
About 8 hours a month cross-referencing policies with the framework and guidance
After
About 4 hours, including checking every point at the page cited
What it's worth
About $117£88€105A$169C$165 a month in manager time saved, against about $17£13€15A$25C$24 to $20£15€18A$29C$28 for Claude Pro. 4 hours saved a month, at an assumed $29£22€26A$42C$41 an hour.
How to set it up
- Sign up for Claude Pro, $17 (about $17£13€15A$25C$24) a month billed annually or $20 (about $20£15€18A$29C$28) monthly, and create a Project for the policy review.
- Download the current EYFS statutory framework and inspection guidance from GOV.UK and upload them with the nursery's policies, removing any children's or staff details.
- Ask for a table of requirements against each policy, marking gaps and out-of-date wording, with page references in both documents.
- Check each point at the page cited in the framework or guidance; delete any you can't find.
- Update the policies yourself, have them approved in the usual way and brief staff on the changes.
What goes wrong
- Claude can misstate a requirement such as a ratio or a qualification rule. The framework, not the table, is what the nursery is held to.
- Older versions of the framework and guidance stay online and are easy to upload by mistake. Use the current versions from GOV.UK.
- Policies must describe what the nursery actually does. Don't copy wording from the table into a policy that doesn't match practice.
- Pro is a personal plan where training on chats is opt-out. Never upload anything about children, families or staff.
