The problem
Nurseries recruit often, and each vacancy needs an advert that stands out and a set of interview questions that cover safeguarding. Recruiting for 2 roles a month, at 1.5 hours for the advert and an hour for the questions, takes 5 hours of the manager's time.
What the AI does
The manager writes notes on the role: room, hours, qualification level, pay, benefits and what makes the nursery a good place to work. They paste the notes into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and ask for a clear advert and a set of interview questions, including safeguarding and values-based questions for safer recruitment. The manager checks the advert for accuracy and fair wording, and adapts the questions to their own safeguarding policy. Candidates' CVs and details are never pasted in.
A worked example
A day nursery in Southampton recruits for about 2 practitioner roles a month. The manager drafts each advert and question set from their own notes and edits the result.
Before
2 roles at 2.5 hours: 5 hours a month
After
2 roles at 1 hour to check and edit: 2 hours a month
What it's worth
About $80£60€71A$115C$113 a month of manager time saved (3 hours at $27£20€24A$38C$38 an hour), for nothing on a free plan or up to about $27£20€24A$38C$38 a month on a paid one.
How to set it up
- Write notes on the role: room, hours, qualification level, pay, benefits and start date.
- Paste them into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and ask for a short, plain advert.
- Ask for interview questions covering safeguarding, child development and your values.
- Check the advert for accuracy, pay and fair wording, and adapt the questions to your own safeguarding policy.
- Keep candidates' details in your own recruitment records, not in the AI account.
What goes wrong
- Words like 'young' or 'energetic' can put off older applicants and may be discriminatory. Read the advert for fair wording.
- Don't paste CVs, references or candidates' names into an AI account.
- Interview questions are only one part of safer recruitment. References, DBS checks and suitability checks still apply.
- A generic advert sounds like every other nursery's. Add what is true and particular about yours.
