The problem
Practitioners write observations in nap time, at the end of the day or at home, and many worry about spelling and tone because parents read them. With 12 practitioners writing 10 observations a week at 6 minutes each, that's 720 minutes a week, about 52 hours a month.
What the AI does
Famly includes Sidekick, a writing assistant, on all its plans from Foundation at $105£79€94A$152C$149 a month. Famly's site says Sidekick tidies up spelling, grammar and tone, so staff spend less time typing. The practitioner records what the child did and said, with a photo, then uses Sidekick to tidy the wording. The key person checks that the meaning hasn't changed, because an observation must describe what was actually seen. Famly's site also mentions observation reviews, so a room leader can edit and approve observations before parents see them; check your plan includes this.
A worked example
A 60-place nursery in Leeds already on Famly Foundation has 12 practitioners writing about 10 observations a week each. Staff start using Sidekick to tidy their wording.
Before
120 observations a week at 6 minutes: about 52 hours a month
After
120 observations a week at 4 minutes: about 34 hours a month
What it's worth
About $293£220€262A$422C$414 a month of practitioner time saved (17.2 hours at an assumed $17£13€15A$25C$24 an hour), if Sidekick cuts 2 minutes from each observation (240 minutes a week, times 4.3). Sidekick is included in Famly, so a nursery already on Famly pays nothing extra; one that isn't pays from $105£79€94A$152C$149 a month excluding VAT.
How to set it up
- Agree as a team what a good observation includes: what the child did and said, and the next step.
- Write the observation in your own words first, then use Sidekick to tidy spelling, grammar and tone.
- Read the tidied version and change anything that no longer matches what you saw.
- Have the room leader review observations before they are shared with parents, at least for the first month.
- Compare a sample of observations before and after to check quality hasn't dropped.
What goes wrong
- Tidying tone can turn a factual note into praise or a judgment. An observation must describe what happened, not what sounds nice.
- Take extra care with observations about additional needs or concerns; those need the key person's own words.
- Sidekick tidies writing; it doesn't assess development. Next steps and assessments stay with the key person.
- Live translation for parents is an add-on below the Professional plan.
