The problem
Officers on lone night shifts need someone checking they're safe. In many small firms that's a supervisor phoning each officer every hour. With 4 lone officers on 10 checks a night at 2 minutes each, that's 80 minutes a night, 40 hours a month, and a call that goes unanswered at 3am may not be noticed quickly.
What the AI does
QR-Patrol's Pro version adds welfare checks, ManDown alerts, mobile forms and face verification to the Base guard tour features, which include an in-app SOS button and real-time alerts. Officers confirm at set intervals in the app, and a missed welfare check or a ManDown alert goes to the supervisor straight away. The supervisor's time goes on the alerts that matter instead of routine calls.
A worked example
A security company in Swansea has 4 officers working alone at night on retail and construction sites. It moves them onto QR-Patrol Pro with welfare checks every hour and ManDown switched on.
Before
4 officers at 10 calls a night and 2 minutes a call: 80 minutes a night, 40 hours a month
After
Welfare checks confirmed in the app; the supervisor deals only with missed checks and alerts, about 20 hours a month
What it's worth
About $399£300€357A$576C$564 a month in time saved, if supervisor time on welfare calls halves: 20 hours a month at an assumed $20£15€18A$29C$28 an hour. QR-Patrol Pro for 4 to 9 guards is €182 (about $209£157€187A$301C$295) a month, or €154 (about $176£132€157A$253C$248) a month billed annually.
How to set it up
- Write your lone working risk assessment and escalation plan before choosing settings: who responds, how fast, and when to call the police.
- Set welfare check intervals per site in QR-Patrol Pro and switch on ManDown alerts.
- Test a missed welfare check and a ManDown alert on each site, at night, with the supervisor responding.
- Keep a fallback for when the app can't connect, such as a phone check-in at fixed times.
- Review alerts and response times monthly.
What goes wrong
- An app can fail silently: no signal, a flat battery, notifications muted. Test alerts regularly and keep the fallback check.
- The app supports your lone working procedure; it doesn't replace the duty to assess and manage the risk.
- Welfare checks and ManDown are on Pro only; Base has the SOS button but not these.
- A supervisor asleep through an alert makes the system worthless. Make sure alerts reach someone awake.
