The problem

A good transformation photo sits on the phone because writing the caption is the part nobody has time for. If you post 8 times a month and each caption takes 15 minutes, that's 120 minutes a month.

What the AI does

After a client says yes to a photo, jot a few notes: the service, the look, the season. Paste them into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini with an example of a caption you liked and ask for three short options in the same voice. Pick one, fix it, add your booking link and post. Keep client names and personal details out of what you paste. Don't let the caption promise results such as 'healthy hair' or 'repairs damage' or imply a service is suitable for anyone; you decide that in a consultation.

A worked example

A hair salon in Frome with an Instagram account of about 1,500 followers posts two colour or cut transformations a week and wants captions that don't all sound the same.

Before

15 minutes a caption: 8 x 15 = 120 minutes a month

After

About 5 minutes to pick, edit and post each one: 8 x 5 = 40 minutes a month

What it's worth

About 80 minutes a month saved (8 x 10 minutes), worth around £33 if your time is worth £25 an hour. Free plans are enough for this; paid plans run from about £4 to about £20 a month for one person.

How to set it up

  1. Get the client's agreement to the photo and to being tagged, and note it in their record.
  2. Write a few lines of notes on the service and the look, without the client's name.
  3. Paste the notes and one example caption into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and ask for three options.
  4. Choose one, check it makes no promise about results, and add your booking link.
  5. Post, and save the best captions as examples for next time.

What goes wrong

  • Posting a client's photo needs their agreement; get it before you take the picture.
  • Assistants invent claims. Delete anything about results, hair health or suitability that you didn't write.
  • Captions that all sound alike get ignored. Change the opening line each time.
  • Don't ask for, or have it write, client testimonials or reviews.
