The problem
Pest control rules change and differ by job: glue traps can't be used on rodents in England without a license from Natural England, product labels set conditions of use, birds can only be controlled under the right license. If an owner spends 3 hours a month searching for answers before quoting unusual jobs, and sometimes relies on an old forum post, that's time lost and a risk of working outside the rules.
What the AI does
Perplexity answers with inline citations on every plan, the free one included. The owner asks a specific question, such as whether a job in England needs a glue trap license or which general license covers a bird species, and asks for official sources: GOV.UK, Natural England, HSE and the product manufacturer's pages. The owner opens each source, reads the current wording and keeps the link with the job record. Where a license or label condition decides the job, the official page and the product label are followed, not the summary.
A worked example
A two-van pest control business in Northamptonshire handles rodent, wasp and bird work for homes and small businesses. The owner uses Perplexity's free plan for rules questions before quoting unusual jobs.
Before
About 3 hours a month searching for rules before quoting
After
About 1 hour, including reading the official pages linked
What it's worth
About $93£70€83A$134C$132 a month in owner time saved, on Perplexity's free plan. 2 hours saved a month, at an assumed $47£35€42A$67C$66 an hour.
How to set it up
- Create a free Perplexity account; cited answers are on every plan.
- Ask one specific question at a time, say which UK nation the job is in, and ask for GOV.UK, Natural England, HSE or manufacturer sources.
- Open each source and read the current wording, especially license conditions and product label instructions.
- Keep the link and the date checked with the job record, alongside the risk assessment.
- If the answer and the official page disagree, follow the official page, and ask the licensing body or your trade association if unsure.
What goes wrong
- Wildlife and glue trap rules differ between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and licenses are reissued. Check the source covers your nation and is current.
- The product label sets the legal conditions of use for that product. A summary never overrides it.
- An answer can cite a trade blog or an old article. Prefer GOV.UK, Natural England, HSE and the manufacturer.
- The free plan limits Deep Research; everyday cited answers are on every plan.
