The problem
In July and August the phone rings all day with wasp nests, and you can't answer it from the top of a ladder in a bee suit. People who don't get through ring the next number. If 3 callers a week book someone else for a $93£70€83A$134C$132 treatment, that's $279£210€250A$403C$395 a week, or about $1,197£900€1,071A$1,728C$1,692 a month in peak season, going to a competitor.
What the AI does
ServiceM8's online booking lets customers answer a few questions, see a price worked out from their answers, choose a time and book straight into your schedule. You can require a deposit or full payment at booking, as a set amount or a percentage, and the customer gets an automatic confirmation email. Put the booking link on your website, Google listing and social media so the wasp season books itself while you work.
A worked example
A sole-trader pest controller in Kent does around 50 jobs a month in wasp season. They set up a ServiceM8 booking form for wasp and hornet nests with questions about where the nest is, a fixed price for easy-to-reach nests and full payment at booking.
Before
About 3 wasp jobs a week lost to missed calls in peak season, worth $279£210€250A$403C$395 a week
After
Those 3 jobs a week booked and paid online, about $1,197£900€1,071A$1,728C$1,692 a month of extra work in July and August
What it's worth
About $599£450€536A$864C$846 a month in profit during wasp season, at an assumed 50% margin on $1,197£900€1,071A$1,728C$1,692 of extra work (3 jobs a week at $93£70€83A$134C$132 times 4.3). That is against $33£25€30A$48C$47 a month for Starter, plus card fees of about $1.85£1.39€1.65A$2.67C$2.61 on each $93£70€83A$134C$132 payment.
How to set it up
- Pick a ServiceM8 plan with enough jobs for your busiest month: Starter is $33£25€30A$48C$47 a month for 50 jobs, Growing $78£59€70A$113C$111 for 150 (both excluding VAT).
- Build a wasp nest booking form with questions that set the price, such as where the nest is and whether it needs a ladder or lance.
- Turn on payment at booking (full payment or a deposit) and connect ServiceM8 Pay for card payments.
- Check which times the booking form offers and block out the days you don't want filled, such as your rest day.
- Put the booking link on your website, Google Business Profile and Facebook page, and test a booking yourself.
What goes wrong
- A nest in a chimney, a cavity wall or a high roof can't be priced from a form. Add an option that sends those to you for a call instead of a fixed price.
- ServiceM8 Pay's page lists 1.65% + 20p for standard UK cards, more for premium and international cards. Allow for it in your price.
- Write down your refund policy for nests that turn out to be bees or have gone by the time you arrive, and show it on the booking page.
- The Free plan is 1 user and 30 jobs a month, which a busy wasp season will pass quickly.
