The problem
After a break-in, a customer wants to know what to change, and a written report with options wins the upgrade work. Writing one up properly takes about 1.5 hours in the evening. At 5 surveys a month that's 7.5 hours, about $350£263€313A$505C$494 if your time is worth $47£35€42A$67C$66 an hour.
What the AI does
Note each door and window as you go: lock type and markings, condition, and what you'd fit. Paste the notes into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and ask for a report in plain English: a short summary, findings door by door, and options from essential to best with the prices you supply. You check every finding and product, then send it on your own letterhead. The assistant words the report; it doesn't decide what's secure.
A worked example
A locksmith in Derby does about 5 security surveys a month, many after burglaries. They record voice notes at each door, paste the transcript and their price list into an AI assistant, and send a two-page report the same evening instead of a one-line quote by text.
Before
About 1.5 hours per report, often sent days later
After
About 30 minutes per report, sent the same day
What it's worth
About $233£175€208A$336C$329 a month of time saved, from 1 hour saved on each of 5 reports at $47£35€42A$67C$66 an hour. The assistants are free, or up to about $27£20€24A$38C$38 a month for a paid plan.
How to set it up
- At each door and window, note the lock type and any markings, its condition and what you recommend.
- Paste the notes and your prices into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and ask for a plain-English report with a summary, findings by door and priced options.
- Check every lock standard and product name against your notes, and correct anything it guessed.
- Add a line asking the customer to check their home insurance policy for any lock requirements.
- Send the report the same day and follow up with a call.
What goes wrong
- An assistant may invent a standard or rating that sounds right. Only include markings and standards you actually saw or will fit.
- Don't tell customers what their insurer requires; their policy wording decides that, so point them to it.
- A security report is sensitive. Leave the customer's address and the weak points of a named property out of what you paste.
