The problem
Someone locked out at 10pm rings the first locksmith on Google, and if it goes to voicemail they ring the next one. A one-van locksmith on a job or driving can easily miss 8 calls a week. If 2 of those were $126£95€113A$182C$179 lockouts that went elsewhere, that's $253£190€226A$365C$357 a week, about $1,087£817€972A$1,569C$1,536 a month ($253£190€226A$365C$357 × 4.3).
What the AI does
Powered Now's PN Receptionist is an AI receptionist in a British voice that answers the calls you can't, takes the job details and texts them straight to your phone, with each call's recording, summary and transcript in the app. You choose when it answers: after hours, all day, or only while you're on a job. Tell it what to listen for, such as "locked out", "child inside" or "break-in", and it texts you immediately or puts the call straight through. You keep your existing number and set up call forwarding.
A worked example
A one-van locksmith in Stoke-on-Trent, mostly lockouts and lock changes, runs jobs in Powered Now Business ($37£28€33A$54C$53 a month) and adds PN Receptionist Speech + Text ($52£39€46A$75C$73 a month), which also texts back callers who hang up. Any call that mentions a child or a vulnerable person inside is put straight through.
Before
About 8 missed calls a week, many of them lost to the next locksmith on the list
After
Every call answered, with 2 extra jobs a week booked, worth about $253£190€226A$365C$357 a week
What it's worth
About $544£409€487A$785C$769 a month in profit, at an assumed 50% margin on about $1,087£817€972A$1,569C$1,536 of extra work (2 extra $126£95€113A$182C$179 jobs a week, times 4.3); lockouts are mostly time and fuel. That is against $76£57€68A$109C$107 to $89£67€80A$129C$126 a month for Powered Now Business plus PN Receptionist, excluding VAT.
How to set it up
- Sign up for Powered Now (Business is $37£28€33A$54C$53 a month for one user) and add PN Receptionist: Speech at $39£29€35A$56C$55 or Speech + Text at $52£39€46A$75C$73 a month.
- Choose when it answers: only while you're on a job, after hours, or all day.
- Set the words that mean urgent, such as "locked out", "child inside", "break-in" or "boarding up", and whether each is put through or texted to you.
- Set up call forwarding from your existing number after a set number of rings.
- Ring your own number from another phone late in the evening and test a lockout, a lock change and a sales call.
- Read the call summaries every evening for the first fortnight and call back anything urgent it didn't flag.
What goes wrong
- The receptionist page doesn't say how many calls or minutes are included, or what happens above a limit. Ask Powered Now before relying on it for a busy line.
- It takes details; it can't confirm the caller lives at the address. Your proof-of-residence check on arrival still applies.
- Don't let it quote a fixed price for opening a door; a uPVC door and a high-security mortice lock are very different jobs.
- The page lists full sync with the Powered Now app as coming soon, so check each inquiry has landed in your diary.
