The problem
Before a commercial renewal or a remarket, a licensed agent reads the client's current policy and each new quote side by side to find the differences in limits, deductibles, endorsements and exclusions. At 2.5 hours for each of 6 comparisons a month, that's 15 hours of a licensed agent's time.
What the AI does
Claude can read long PDFs in one go, so the agent uploads the current policy and the competing quote together and asks for a table of every difference: limits, deductibles, endorsements, exclusions and conditions, each with the page it came from. The agent checks each line against the documents and decides what matters for the client. Claude never explains coverage to the client or recommends a policy; a licensed agent does, as state department of insurance licensing rules require. The Team plan is used because Anthropic says it doesn't use business data for training by default.
A worked example
A two-agent independent agency in Richmond, Virginia, writes small commercial packages for contractors and shops and remarkets about 6 accounts a month. Both agents use Claude Team to build the first comparison table, then check it against the PDFs before any client meeting.
Before
2.5 hours a comparison for 6 comparisons: 15 hours a month
After
About 1 hour a comparison, mostly checking: 6 hours a month
What it's worth
About $405£305€362A$585C$572 a month saved, against a $40£30€36A$58C$57 cost. That's 9 hours (15 less 6) at an assumed $45£34€40A$65C$64 for a licensed agent hour. Claude Team is $20£15€18A$29C$28 a seat a month billed annually, or $25£19€22A$36C$35 monthly, with a 2-seat minimum: $40£30€36A$58C$57 to $50£38€45A$72C$71 for two agents.
How to set it up
- Set up Claude Team for both agents so client documents stay under business terms rather than personal accounts.
- Upload the current policy and the quote together and ask for a table of differences with the page reference for each line.
- Check every line of the table against the PDFs, and look yourself at forms and endorsements the table doesn't mention.
- Write your own recommendation to the client; never send Claude's table as coverage advice.
- Keep the comparison in the client file in your agency management system as part of your notes.
What goes wrong
- Claude can misread a form number or miss an endorsement listed on a schedule. The page references make checking quicker, but a licensed agent still checks every line.
- On the free or personal plans, usage limits are tighter and the data terms are personal ones. Client policies belong on Team.
- A comparison of wording isn't a recommendation. Explaining what a difference means for the client stays with the licensed agent.
- Quotes often leave out full forms. Ask the carrier for the specimen forms before treating two documents as comparable.
