The problem
Many agencies have households that buy only auto from them while their home or umbrella policy sits with another agent, and nobody has time to ask. If a regular email brought 2 of those households a month to bundle a $1,500£1,128€1,342A$2,165C$2,120 home policy at 12% commission, that's $360£271€322A$520C$509 a month in commission you're not earning.
What the AI does
Mailchimp is email marketing software with audience segments, automated flows and, on the Standard plan, generative AI tools for drafting content. The agency exports its auto-only households from the agency management system into a segment and sends a short monthly email inviting them to book a free home or umbrella review. Mailchimp's AI can draft the email for the agent to rewrite. A licensed agent approves every email, promises no price or saving, and handles every review conversation, as state department of insurance licensing rules require. Every email carries the agency's physical address and a working unsubscribe, as CAN-SPAM requires.
A worked example
A three-person independent agency in Louisville has about 450 households with auto only. It loads them into a Mailchimp segment and sends one short email a month, each on a different topic: bundling, umbrella basics, a home coverage checkup.
Before
No regular contact with 450 auto-only households about their other policies
After
About 2 households a month book a review and bundle a home policy
What it's worth
About $180£135€161A$260C$254 a month in profit, against a $20£15€18A$29C$28 cost. 2 home policies a month at $1,500£1,128€1,342A$2,165C$2,120 premium and 12% commission is $360£271€322A$520C$509 in commission, and at an assumed 50% margin that's $180£135€161A$260C$254. Mailchimp Standard starts at $20£15€18A$29C$28 a month for up to 500 contacts and includes the generative AI tools; the price rises with more contacts.
How to set it up
- Export auto-only households with email addresses from your agency management system, leaving out anyone who has opted out of marketing.
- Set up the Standard plan, add your physical address to the footer and check the unsubscribe link works.
- Draft each email with Mailchimp's AI or on your own, then have a licensed agent rewrite and approve it: no quoted prices, savings or coverage promises.
- Check your state's insurance advertising rules, including whether your license number must appear.
- Log each booked review in your agency system so the next export leaves out clients who bundled.
What goes wrong
- Mailchimp prices rise with contacts. Past 500 contacts, check the price at your contact count before importing the whole book.
- An AI draft may promise savings or describe coverage loosely. A licensed agent edits every line before sending.
- Some states require the agency's license number, or a specific disclosure, in advertising. Check before the first send.
- Texts are a different matter: an SMS version needs prior express written consent under the TCPA. Keep this to email unless you have that consent.
