The problem
Scheme and rules questions come up all year: whether an SFI action fits a field, what a capital grant covers, what the farming rules for water mean for a muck heap. If a farmer spends 4 hours a month digging through GOV.UK guidance and the farming press to answer them, often in the evening, and sometimes acts on an out-of-date article, that's time lost and money at risk.
What the AI does
Perplexity answers with inline citations on every plan, the free one included. The farmer asks a specific question and asks for GOV.UK and Rural Payments Agency sources, then opens each cited page and reads the current guidance. Where the answer affects an application or a claim, the farmer checks the scheme's own guidance and, if unsure, asks the RPA or a land agent. Deadlines stay in the farm diary and the RPA service: Perplexity answers questions, it doesn't track dates.
A worked example
A 300-acre mixed farm in Herefordshire is reviewing its SFI actions and considering a capital grant for yard improvements. The farmer uses Perplexity's free plan for the guidance questions.
Before
About 4 hours a month searching scheme and rules guidance
After
About 1.5 hours, including reading the GOV.UK pages linked
What it's worth
About $84£63€75A$121C$118 a month in the farmer's time saved, on Perplexity's free plan. 2.5 hours saved a month, at an assumed $33£25€30A$48C$47 an hour.
How to set it up
- Create a free Perplexity account; cited answers are on every plan.
- Ask one specific question at a time, say which UK nation the farm is in, and ask for GOV.UK and Rural Payments Agency sources.
- Open each cited page, check its 'last updated' date and read the guidance itself.
- Before applying or changing an agreement, check the scheme's own guidance and ask the RPA or your land agent if unsure.
- Keep scheme dates in the farm diary and the RPA service, with a second person checking them; never take a deadline from an answer.
What goes wrong
- Schemes change and close, and old guidance stays online. An answer can cite a version that no longer applies.
- Rules differ between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Check the source covers your farm.
- An answer can summarize a page wrongly. The scheme guidance and your agreement are what the RPA will hold you to.
- Perplexity doesn't track deadlines, and reminders of any kind can fail silently. Check the dates in the RPA service regularly.
