The problem
Pupils want to know what went well and what to practice with family between lessons, but typing a useful debrief takes about 5 minutes. With 30 lessons a week that's 2.5 hours, squeezed into gaps between pupils or done at night.
What the AI does
Once parked with the engine off, open ChatGPT Voice and talk for a minute about the lesson: what the pupil did well, the faults, and what to practice. Ask it to check you've covered what to practice next. Voice works within a chat, so the transcript is there when you finish, and you ask in text for a short debrief message in your usual layout to send to the pupil. Progress ratings stay in your instructor app as now. Voice is on every plan; Go (about $9£7€8A$13C$13 a month) gives 3 hours of Live voice in a rolling 24 hours.
A worked example
An independent driving instructor in Leicester teaches about 30 lessons a week. After each lesson, parked up between pupils, they talk through the debrief for about a minute and send the tidied message to the pupil.
Before
About 5 minutes typing each debrief: 2.5 hours a week
After
About 2.5 minutes talking and checking: 1.25 hours a week
What it's worth
About $214£161€192A$309C$303 a month in time saved, against about $9£7€8A$13C$13 for ChatGPT Go. Debriefs drop from 2.5 to 1.25 hours a week, and 75 minutes times 4.3 is about 5.4 hours a month at an assumed $40£30€36A$58C$56 an hour.
How to set it up
- Choose ChatGPT Go (€8, about $9£7€8A$13C$13 a month) so voice lasts a full teaching day; Free voice is limited.
- Make one chat called 'Debriefs' and type your layout once: well done, work on, practice before next lesson, using DVSA terms.
- Only when parked with the engine off, tap the voice icon and talk through the lesson, using the pupil's first name at most.
- End the call and type: 'Write the debrief for that lesson in my layout, under 80 words.' Check it, then send it from your usual app or messages.
- Keep skill ratings and test readiness in your instructor app as now.
What goes wrong
- Never use it while driving or supervising a pupil who is driving. Using a hand-held phone while in charge of a vehicle is an offense.
- Keep it to driving. Don't mention health, anxiety, medication or eyesight; those are special-category data and don't belong in a personal AI plan.
- OpenAI says voice transcripts are not word-for-word records. Check each fault is described as it happened.
- Go and Plus are personal plans: turn off 'Improve the model for everyone' in Data Controls if you don't want your data used for training.
