The problem
Professional bodies expect counselors to keep their skills and knowledge up to date, and accreditation or a CPD check means showing what you did and what changed. If you write up 4 CPD activities a month at 25 minutes each, that's 100 minutes a month, so reflections pile up until a deadline.
What the AI does
After a workshop, a book or a learning theme from supervision, jot down what you did, what you learned and how it affects your work, with no client details or case material. Paste the notes into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and ask for a short reflection under those headings. You edit it until it says what you actually think, then file it in your CPD log.
A worked example
A UKCP-registered psychotherapist in Edinburgh logs about 4 CPD activities a month: training days, reading and learning themes from supervision. They keep voice notes and write them up monthly.
Before
25 minutes per reflection: 100 minutes a month, often months late
After
About 8 minutes to edit each: 32 minutes a month, filed the same month
What it's worth
About $68£51€61A$98C$96 a month of the therapist's time, at an assumed $60£45€54A$86C$85 an hour: 17 minutes saved on each of 4 reflections is 68 minutes.
How to set it up
- Note what you did, what you learned and what you'll do differently, straight after each activity.
- Leave out all client material, even disguised. Supervision learning goes in as a theme, not a case.
- Paste the notes into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and ask for a short reflection under those headings, in plain language.
- Rewrite anything that doesn't sound like you or overstates what changed, then file it in your CPD log.
- Check your body's current CPD requirements each year, because BACP, UKCP and HCPC differ.
What goes wrong
- Disguised case material can still identify a client to someone who knows them. Keep it out of any AI tool.
- A polished reflection that isn't true is worse than a rough honest one, and you may be asked to talk about it.
- An assistant may describe the wrong body's requirements. Use BACP, UKCP or HCPC guidance itself.
- Don't use an AI assistant for supervision notes or anything else about clients.
