The problem
Families often ask for donations to a charity instead of flowers, and the funeral home ends up counting cash and checks, recording each giver, banking it and sending it on with a list for the family. If 5 funerals a month have collections and each takes about 2 hours to handle, that's 10 hours a month, with the worry of handling cash.
What the AI does
MuchLoved, which works alongside a registered charity, provides funeral notice, tribute and donation pages. Funeral directors can show funeral notices on their own website with service details, maps and donation links, and families get a tribute page where people can leave messages, light candles and give online. MuchLoved handles donations with Gift Aid processing. Offline gifts can be added to the total later, and the family keeps the tribute page.
A worked example
An independent funeral director in Cumbria arranges about 8 funerals a month, 5 of them with charity collections. It adds MuchLoved's notices to its website and offers an online donation page to every family who wants one.
Before
5 collections a month at about 2 hours each to count, record, bank and send on: 10 hours
After
Most gifts given online; about 30 minutes each for the remaining cash and checks: 2.5 hours
What it's worth
About $250£188€224A$361C$353 a month in time saved: 7.5 hours (10 down to 2.5) at an assumed $33£25€30A$48C$47 an hour. MuchLoved's page says packages start from $53£40€48A$77C$75 a month, with a free package for small independent funeral directors. Donor fees are 3.2% including Gift Aid reclaim, deducted from donations rather than paid by you.
How to set it up
- Contact MuchLoved about its packages and whether the free package fits your business.
- Add the funeral notice widget to your website so families and friends can find service details.
- At the arrangement meeting, ask the family whether they'd like a notice and an online donation page, and to which charity.
- Check every notice with the family before it goes live: names, dates, times and the place.
- After the funeral, add any offline gifts so the total is right, and pass the tribute page to the family.
What goes wrong
- Funeral notices are public. Some families don't want service details online; always ask first.
- Check what the free package includes against the paid ones before you rely on it.
- Donors pay the 3.2% fee out of their gift; mention it if families ask why a total looks lower.
- Some people still prefer to give cash or checks. Keep a simple, safe way to accept them.
