The problem
Families often ask the funeral director for help with the newspaper notice, the online notice and the short tribute in the order of service, and many find it hard to start. Helping each family with this takes about 45 minutes. At 8 funerals a month, that's 6 hours.
What the AI does
Write down the family's own words during the arrangement meeting: how the person was known, the people they want named, what mattered to them, the service details. Paste the notes, using first names only, into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and ask for a short, simple notice and a few lines for the order of service in a gentle, plain tone. Read it through, take out anything that isn't from the family, and offer it to them as a starting point to change as they wish.
A worked example
A family funeral director in Northumberland helps most of its 8 families a month with notice and order of service wording. Arrangers draft a starting point with an assistant from their meeting notes and go through it with the family.
Before
8 families at about 45 minutes each: 6 hours
After
8 families at about 20 minutes each to draft and go through: about 2.7 hours
What it's worth
About $110£83€99A$159C$156 a month in time saved: about 3.3 hours (6 down to 2.7) at an assumed $33£25€30A$48C$47 an hour. The free plans of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can do this; a paid plan costs up to about $27£20€24A$38C$38 a month for one person if you hit usage limits.
How to set it up
- Note the family's own words and the details they want included at the arrangement meeting.
- Use first names only and leave out addresses and anything private when pasting into the assistant.
- Ask for a short, simple notice and order of service lines in a gentle, plain tone, using only what's in the notes.
- Read the draft yourself and remove anything the assistant has added or assumed.
- Offer it to the family as a starting point; they change it as they wish and approve every word.
What goes wrong
- An assistant may add sentiments, relationships or details the family never mentioned. Nothing goes in that the family didn't say.
- Some families want to write every word themselves. Offer the draft only if they'd like help.
- Names in notices must be exactly as the family wants them, including nicknames and spellings. Check them against what they gave you.
- Keep family details out of consumer AI plans beyond what the wording needs.
