The problem
Before you choose a lender you need to know what the client's statements show: regular income, other finance payments, returned items and the lowest balance. If you package 10 applications a month and reading 6 months of PDF statements for each takes 60 minutes, that's 10 hours a month.
What the AI does
DocuClipper converts PDF bank statements into Excel, or imports for Xero and QuickBooks, with automatic transaction categorization. Upload the client's statements, check the totals against the PDF, then sort and filter to see income, payments to other lenders and anything returned. You write the summary for the lender yourself. DocuClipper's Business plan ($103.62£77.91€92.71A$149.59C$146.47 a month billed annually) adds cash flow, flow of funds and fraud detection analysis if your volumes justify it.
A worked example
A two-broker firm in Preston looks at 10 applications a month, each with 6 monthly statements of about 4 pages. That's 240 pages a month, so it uses DocuClipper Starter with 300 pages.
Before
60 minutes reading PDFs for each of 10 applications: 10 hours a month
After
About 25 minutes to upload, check and summarize each: about 4.2 hours a month
What it's worth
About $310£233€277A$447C$438 a month in broker time, against $59£44€52A$84C$83 to $84£63€75A$121C$118 for DocuClipper. That is 35 minutes saved on each of 10 applications, 350 minutes or about 5.8 hours, at an assumed $53£40€48A$77C$75 an hour. Starter with 300 pages is $58.84£44.24€52.65A$84.94C$83.17 a month billed annually or $84.06£63.20€75.21A$121.34C$118.82 monthly; 10 applications of 24 pages is 240 pages.
How to set it up
- Start the 14-day free trial (up to 120 pages) with statements from three past deals you know well.
- Check the converted opening and closing balances against each PDF before trusting the output.
- Set up a simple summary layout: monthly income, other finance payments, returned items and lowest balance.
- Write the lender summary yourself from the checked spreadsheet.
- Delete client documents from DocuClipper once the deal is done, in line with your retention policy.
What goes wrong
- A misread line or a missed page changes the picture. Always reconcile opening and closing balances to the PDF.
- Statements are personal and business financial data under UK GDPR. DocuClipper says data is encrypted in transit and it holds SOC 2 Type II, but the page doesn't say where data is stored.
- Every processed page counts, and statements get long. Count a typical month's pages before choosing a tier.
- The analysis is yours. Don't tell a client a lender will approve them on the strength of the spreadsheet.
