The problem
People choosing a man and van look straight at the reviews, because they're letting a stranger carry their things. A busy owner remembers to ask maybe once a week. If 40 customers a month are happy but only 2 leave a review, the business looks smaller and less trusted than it is next to a rival with ten times as many.
What the AI does
ServiceM8's UK pricing page lists automated feedback requests on every plan: emails and texts to clients asking for feedback after the job is completed. Write the message once, thanking them and saying where to leave a review, and it goes out when you mark the job done. Check in the settings whether you can put your Google review link in the message, and reply to every review yourself.
A worked example
A man and van business in Nottingham does about 40 jobs a month, mostly student moves and furniture deliveries, and has 14 Google reviews after three years.
Before
About 2 reviews a month, when the owner remembers to ask
After
Every customer asked automatically; about 6 reviews a month
What it's worth
About $72£54€64A$104C$102 a month in profit, if more and fresher reviews bring in 2 extra $120£90€107A$173C$169 jobs a month; that's an assumption, so watch your inquiries. It is $239£180€214A$346C$338 of work at an assumed 30% margin. ServiceM8 Starter is $33£25€30A$48C$47 a month excluding VAT, and Google Business Profile is free; if you already use ServiceM8 for bookings, there's no extra cost.
How to set it up
- Claim and complete your free Google Business Profile, and copy its link for customers to leave a review.
- Turn on feedback requests in ServiceM8 and write a short, friendly message in your own words.
- Check whether you can include the Google review link in the message, and test it on your own phone.
- Mark every job complete in the app, so every customer gets asked.
- Reply to every review within a couple of days, thanking good ones and answering complaints calmly.
What goes wrong
- Don't offer discounts or gifts for reviews, and don't ask only the customers you think are happy. Google's rules and consumer law both frown on it.
- Requests only go to jobs marked complete in the app. Jobs left open never trigger one.
- A bad review will come. A calm, factual reply does more for the next customer than the review itself does harm.
- Texts use the plan's SMS allowance; Starter includes 100 a month, then 5p each.
