The problem
Many pet shops deliver heavy bags to regulars who ring or text the same order every month, and the one who forgets to ring may buy elsewhere. If a shop takes 60 repeat orders a month by phone and text, at 6 minutes each to take, charge and note, that's 360 minutes, 6 hours a month.
What the AI does
Shopify's free Subscriptions app adds auto-billed subscriptions at weekly, monthly or yearly intervals, with subscribe-and-save, fixed or custom pricing, and lets customers skip, pause or cancel. Subscription products can be sold online and on Shopify POS, and the app has email templates for order confirmations and payment reminders. Offer each regular food line on a 4-weekly or monthly repeat, then pack and deliver or hold for collection as you do now. Shopify decides which stores can use the app, so check eligibility in your admin first.
A worked example
A pet shop in Kendal delivers to about 60 regulars a month who order the same food by phone or text. It already has a Shopify Basic shop for online sales.
Before
60 repeat orders x 6 minutes to take, charge and note: 360 minutes, 6 hours a month
After
Most regulars on a repeat order; about 1 minute each to check and pack: 60 minutes, 1 hour a month
What it's worth
About $100£75€89A$144C$141 a month saved, at an assumed $20£15€18A$29C$28 an hour for 5 hours (360 minus 60 minutes). The Subscriptions app is free; Shopify Basic is $33£25€30A$48C$47 a month, or $25£19€23A$36C$36 billed yearly, and card fees are extra. Any subscribe-and-save discount comes off your margin, so set it with care.
How to set it up
- In your Shopify admin, install the free Shopify Subscriptions app and check your store is eligible.
- Add a repeat option to your regular food lines, every 4 weeks or monthly, with any discount you can afford.
- Edit the confirmation and payment reminder emails into your own words.
- Offer it to phone regulars at their next order, and set it up together if they want.
- Each week, check upcoming repeat orders against stock before the charge date.
What goes wrong
- Shopify decides eligibility, and some payment set-ups can't sell subscriptions; check before you promise customers.
- A subscribe-and-save discount on low-margin food can wipe out the profit; work out the margin per bag first.
- Make stopping as easy as starting; customers can skip, pause or cancel, so tell them how.
- If a line is discontinued, every repeat order for it needs a phone call, not a silent swap.
