The problem
Customers need to know where the van is each day, so traders post every morning from the pitch, often late or not at all. If a trader posts 5 trading days a week to Instagram and Facebook and each post takes 10 minutes on the day, that's 100 minutes a week, about 430 minutes or 7.2 hours a month.
What the AI does
Buffer is a social media scheduling tool. Its free plan allows up to 3 channels and 10 scheduled posts per channel, and its AI Assistant, listed on all plans, helps refine and repurpose your copy. On Sunday, write the week's locations, times and specials, schedule one post per trading day to Instagram and Facebook, and use the AI Assistant to tidy the wording. Five posts a week per channel fits the free plan's queue. You change a post when a market is canceled or the weather turns.
A worked example
A bao bun van in Bristol trades at 5 different markets and lunch pitches a week. The owner schedules the week's location posts on Sunday evening with a photo of each dish.
Before
10 posts a week x 10 minutes on the day = 100 minutes a week, about 430 minutes or 7.2 hours a month
After
40 minutes on Sunday to write and schedule the week: about 172 minutes or 2.9 hours a month
What it's worth
About $92£69€82A$132C$130 a month saved, at an assumed $21£16€19A$31C$30 an hour for 4.3 hours (430 minus 172 = 258 minutes). Buffer's free plan covers 2 channels with 5 scheduled posts each a week. If you want more queued posts, Essentials is $5 (about $5£4€5A$8C$8) per channel a month on yearly billing, so about $11£8€10A$15C$15 for two.
How to set it up
- Connect your Instagram and Facebook accounts to a free Buffer account.
- Each Sunday, list the week's pitches with exact addresses, times and specials from your own diary.
- Write one post per trading day, use the AI Assistant to tidy the wording, and check every place, time and price before scheduling.
- Add your own photos, and schedule each post for early morning on the day.
- If a market is canceled, edit or delete that post straight away and post the change.
What goes wrong
- The free plan holds 10 scheduled posts per channel. Schedule a week at a time, not a month.
- The AI Assistant can add claims you didn't make. Never let it describe a dish as vegan, gluten-free or allergen-free; that comes from your records.
- A scheduled post for a canceled market sends customers to an empty car park. Check the week's posts each morning.
- Prices are in dollars and per channel, so adding TikTok or another channel on a paid plan raises the cost.
