The problem
A farm shop's best weeks follow the seasons: the first asparagus, strawberries, new-season lamb, Christmas turkey orders. Customers who would come for them often find out too late, from a chalkboard at the gate or a Facebook post they never saw. A shop with 450 customers who have asked for news, but no way of sending it, is relying on passing trade in its 6 or 8 best weeks of the year.
What the AI does
Brevo is an email marketing platform with a drag-and-drop editor, sign-up forms, contact segments and an AI tool for drafting email copy. Collect sign-ups at the till and on your website with a clear promise, such as a short email each Thursday with what's in season and on the counter. Build one template, and each week drop in 3 or 4 items with a photo, using the AI tool for a first draft of the words, then check prices and stock before sending. Under PECR you need consent, a clear sender and a working unsubscribe in every email.
A worked example
A farm shop and café near Ludlow has 450 customers who signed up at the till for news. It sends one email every Thursday with what's in from the farm and local producers, plus Christmas order dates in season.
Before
450 sign-ups and no email; news on a chalkboard at the gate and 1 or 2 Facebook posts a week
After
A weekly email to 450 people, written in about 30 minutes, bringing an assumed 8 extra visits a week at $27£20€24A$38C$38
What it's worth
About $274£206€245A$396C$387 a month in profit, at an assumed 30% margin on $915£688€819A$1,321C$1,293 of extra takings (8 extra visits a week at $27£20€24A$38C$38 $213£160€190A$307C$301 a week, times 4.3). That's against about 2 hours a month to write the emails and $8£6€7A$12C$11 for Brevo Starter, or $17£13€15A$25C$24 on Standard without the Brevo logo. The 8 visits are an assumption; count them with a mention-the-email offer before relying on the figure.
How to set it up
- Put a sign-up card at the till and a form on your website saying what you'll send, how often, and that people can unsubscribe any time.
- Add each sign-up with the date and how they agreed; never add customers just because they paid by card.
- Build one template with your logo, a seasonal photo and space for 3 or 4 items.
- Each Thursday, use Brevo's AI tool to draft the words, check every price and that the stock will be there on Saturday, then send.
- Run a small offer such as 'mention this email for a free coffee' for a month to see how many visits it brings.
What goes wrong
- Marketing emails need consent under PECR and UK GDPR; a till receipt or loyalty card isn't consent unless the customer ticked for news.
- Brevo's free plan sends up to 300 emails a day, so a 450-person list needs Starter at $8£6€7A$12C$11 a month or more.
- Promising strawberries that sell out by 10am annoys people. Say 'while they last' and keep quantities honest.
- Starter emails carry the Brevo logo; removing it is an $11£8€10A$15C$15 add-on or comes with Standard at $17£13€15A$25C$24.
