The problem
A private GP finishes a consultation and then writes the notes and any letter. If you see 12 patients a day, 4 days a week (48 a week) and the write-up takes 4 minutes each, that's 192 minutes a week, about 13.8 hours a month (192 x 4.3 / 60).
What the AI does
Heidi is an AI scribe: it transcribes the consultation and drafts notes and letters from templates. The GP reads the draft, corrects it and signs it off. The GP remains responsible for the record under GMC guidance on records, and for anything sent to the patient or another clinician.
A worked example
A private GP clinic in Guildford with one GP sees about 48 patients a week. The GP uses Heidi for notes and referral letters, and reviews every draft before it is saved.
Before
4 minutes of write-up per consultation: 13.8 hours a month
After
About 2 minutes to review and sign each: 6.9 hours a month
What it's worth
About 6.9 hours a month saved (2 minutes x 48 a week: 96 minutes x 4.3 / 60), worth around £688 if a GP's time is worth £100 an hour. Free plan, or Clinician at £70 a month monthly (£55 billed yearly). Heidi's page doesn't make clear whether VAT is added or what the billing basis is, so confirm before budgeting.
How to set it up
- Ask Heidi for its compliance documents and a data processing agreement before using it with patients.
- Ask Heidi what clinical safety documentation it holds, and record the answer.
- Update your privacy notice and tell patients how recording and AI are used, and ask for consent before recording.
- Start with one GP for two weeks, reviewing every draft against what was said.
- Choose the plan after the trial: the free plan has a smaller usage allowance than paid seats, and some features differ by plan, so check Heidi's plan page.
What goes wrong
- The note is the GP's record. A draft can miss or invent a symptom, drug, dose or allergy; read it line by line.
- Heidi's pricing page doesn't say where data is hosted. Ask, and check it against your UK GDPR duties and your CQC registration.
- Recording consultations needs patient awareness and consent. Some patients will say no; have a manual route.
- Paid plans differ in features, and the free plan has a smaller allowance. Check the plan page before you rely on one.
