The problem
Patients miss appointments and arrive without having filled in the paperwork. If 6 of your 206 monthly appointments are missed and a consultation is worth £120 to you (an assumption), that's £720 a month of empty slots.
What the AI does
Medesk says it sends automated SMS and email confirmations and reminders, and lets patients complete online forms before they come, with the answers recorded in each patient's record. The GP still reads the intake before the consultation. Check your plan and the SMS module before you rely on text reminders. Medesk's Free plan covers 50 appointments a month with email reminders; SMS needs the SMS module, which adds 20%, plus the cost of each text.
A worked example
A private GP clinic in Harrogate has 48 appointments a week, about 206 a month (48 x 4.3), which is 5 blocks of 50 on Medesk Pro. It misses about 6 a month and spends 5 minutes a time chasing paper intake forms.
Before
6 missed appointments a month, about £720; paper forms chased by hand
After
If reminders halve the misses, 3 fewer a month: about £360 recovered
What it's worth
About £360 a month if reminders prevent 3 of the 6 misses at £120 each (assumptions). 206 appointments is 5 blocks at $16, so $80 (about £60) for up to 250 appointments; adding the SMS module (20% more) is $96 (about £72), before per-text fees.
How to set it up
- Check Medesk's pricing page: Pro is $16 per 50 appointments, and add-on modules are 20% more.
- Ask Medesk how it counts appointments and whether text reminders need the SMS module or your own SMS provider.
- Check Medesk's data protection information and sign a data processing agreement before loading patient records.
- Build a short intake form and have the GP review it before the consultation.
- After two months, compare missed appointments with the two months before.
What goes wrong
- Medesk's page says it is built for GDPR-compliant private practice but doesn't state where data is hosted. Ask before you migrate patient records.
- Reminders cost money per text, and the page doesn't give the amount. Ask.
- A reminder that names the clinic or doctor can reveal sensitive information on a lock screen. Keep wording neutral.
- Pricing is in US dollars and counts appointments, so a busier month raises the bill.
