The problem
A customer who puts a freshly coated car through a brush wash before the coating has cured spoils the finish and blames the detailer. Explaining aftercare at every handover takes about 15 minutes, and a detailer doing 12 coatings and corrections a month spends 3 hours repeating it, while customers still forget most of it.
What the AI does
Write down your own aftercare rules for each service: the curing time for the coating you use, which shampoos and drying methods, and what voids your guarantee. Paste the notes into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and ask for a one-page guide in plain English with a short checklist at the top. Check every instruction against the coating maker's own guidance and your guarantee terms, then save it as a PDF to send with the invoice and print for the glovebox.
A worked example
A detailer in Cheltenham does about 12 coatings and paint corrections a month. They use an assistant to turn their notes into three guides, one per service, and check each against the coating maker's data sheet.
Before
About 15 minutes explaining aftercare at each of 12 handovers: 3 hours a month
After
About 5 minutes per handover, walking through the printed guide: 1 hour a month
What it's worth
About $67£50€60A$96C$94 a month in time: 2 hours saved at an assumed $33£25€30A$48C$47 an hour, against free to about $27£20€24A$38C$38 a month for the assistant. Fewer call-backs about finishes spoiled by the wrong washing aren't counted.
How to set it up
- Write your own aftercare rules for each service, including the coating maker's curing time.
- Paste the notes, with no customer details, into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and ask for a one-page guide with a checklist.
- Check every instruction against the maker's data sheet and your guarantee terms, and remove anything the assistant added.
- Add your logo and contact details and save it as a PDF.
- Send the guide with every invoice and talk the customer through it at handover.
What goes wrong
- An assistant may invent curing times or product advice. Use the coating maker's figures, not the AI's.
- If the guide says something different from your guarantee terms, the customer will rely on whichever suits them. Make them match.
- Free assistant plans have usage limits, but a one-page guide is well within them.
