The problem
Jewelry is hard to photograph: reflections, dust and a messy bench show up on every shot. If a shop adds 30 pieces a month online and spends 12 minutes editing each one's photos, that's 360 minutes, 6 hours a month, or a photographer's bill instead.
What the AI does
Photoroom is an AI photo editor. Its Pro plan includes a background remover, retouch, AI shadow presets, a product fixer, AI expand and resize and an image enhancer, with 1,000 exports a month. Shoot each piece in good light as usual, remove the background, retouch dust and fingerprints, add a preset shadow and resize for the website and Instagram. The photo must still show the piece truly: stone color, metal color and finish can't be changed, because customers rely on the photo and can return items that don't match.
A worked example
An independent jewelry shop in York with the owner, a bench jeweller and one sales assistant adds about 30 pieces a month to its Shopify shop and edits 3 photos of each in Photoroom Pro (90 exports).
Before
About 12 minutes a piece editing photos: 30 x 12 = 360 minutes, 6 hours a month
After
About 4 minutes a piece in Photoroom: 30 x 4 = 120 minutes, 2 hours a month
What it's worth
About 4 hours a month saved (240 minutes), worth around $133£100€119A$192C$188 if your time is worth $33£25€30A$48C$47 an hour. Photoroom Pro was shown as €9.99 (about $12£9€11A$17C$17) a month, or €5.99 (about $7£5€6A$10C$9) a month billed yearly, VAT included; UK prices may differ slightly.
How to set it up
- Start a Photoroom Pro trial and test it on a polished ring, a fine chain and a stone set piece.
- Pick one background and shadow style for the whole range.
- Remove dust and fingerprints only; don't change the color of metal or stones.
- Add one photo on a hand or next to a ruler so customers can judge size.
- Compare every finished photo with the piece before it goes online.
What goes wrong
- Over-retouching a stone's color or clarity misdescribes the piece; customers can return it and complain under consumer protection law.
- Fine chains and open settings can lose detail when the background is removed; check the edges at full size.
- A plain background hides scale; a ring looks the same at 2mm or 6mm wide, so say the size in the listing too.
- Prices were shown in euros when checked; the Shopify connection needs the Max plan.
