The problem
Interview recordings served by the prosecution often come with only a short summary, and finding and typing the passages that matter means hours with headphones. If a firm handles 10 recorded interviews a month averaging 45 minutes, and a paralegal spends 90 minutes on each typing the key passages, that's 900 minutes, 15 hours a month.
What the AI does
Happy Scribe is a transcription service: you upload the audio and it produces an AI transcript with speaker detection that you can search and edit. The paralegal reads the transcript to find the passages the solicitor needs, then checks each one against the recording and corrects it. Happy Scribe says its data center is in the European Union and that it holds SOC 2 Type 2. The solicitor decides what the interview shows and how to use it.
A worked example
A five-person criminal defense firm in Leeds receives about 10 interview recordings a month, averaging 45 minutes each. A paralegal uploads each to Happy Scribe's Pro plan, reads the transcript and checks the passages the solicitor needs against the audio.
Before
90 minutes per interview finding and typing key passages: 15 hours a month
After
About 30 minutes per interview to read and check the AI transcript: 5 hours a month
What it's worth
About $399£300€357A$576C$564 a month of paralegal time, if it is worth $40£30€36A$58C$56 an hour: 60 minutes saved on each of 10 interviews is 600 minutes, 10 hours. Happy Scribe Pro is €19 (about $21£16€19A$31C$30) a month billed annually or €29 (about $33£25€30A$48C$47) monthly, for 600 AI minutes a month and 3 users; 10 interviews of 45 minutes use 450.
How to set it up
- Check your firm's policy, and any conditions attached to the disclosed material, before uploading it to an outside service.
- Ask Happy Scribe for its data processing terms and how files are deleted, and get your COLP's approval.
- Choose Pro: Basic allows only 120 minutes a month and caps each recording at 90 minutes.
- Upload each recording, then check every passage you plan to rely on against the audio, word for word.
- Delete the audio and transcript from Happy Scribe once the checked passages are on the file.
What goes wrong
- An AI transcript can mishear a word that changes the meaning of an answer. Never quote it to the court or the prosecution without checking the audio.
- Material disclosed by the prosecution may be used only for the case. Keep uploads to that purpose and delete them afterwards.
- Recordings are criminal offense data under UK GDPR. Happy Scribe's security page doesn't mention a data processing agreement, so ask for one first.
- Accents, crosstalk and poor custody suite audio lower accuracy. Allow more checking time for those.
