The problem
When the gym down the road drops its joining fee or launches a cheap off-peak deal, the first sign is often a member asking to freeze. Checking 4 rivals' websites properly takes about 30 minutes a week, about 2.2 hours a month, and it's the job that gets skipped in January, when it matters most.
What the AI does
ChatGPT can run scheduled tasks on its own, including monitoring tasks that check for changes, use what they found on earlier runs, and send a notification when something relevant changes. You ask once: every Monday morning, check these 4 membership pages and tell me if any monthly price, joining fee or offer has changed. Results arrive as a push notification, an email or both. Scheduled tasks are on every plan: Free runs them in flexible windows such as 'morning', and paid plans such as Go (about $9£7€8A$13C$13 a month) add exact times.
A worked example
An independent gym in Swindon with about 400 members competes with 2 budget chains and 2 local gyms. The owner sets one ChatGPT monitoring task for Monday mornings with the 4 membership page addresses.
Before
About 30 minutes a week checking rivals' sites, often skipped
After
A Monday notification read in about 5 minutes, flagging only what changed
What it's worth
About $72£54€64A$104C$102 a month in time saved, on the Free plan or about $9£7€8A$13C$13 a month on Go. Checking drops from 30 minutes a week to 5, and 25 minutes times 4.3 is about 1.8 hours a month at an assumed $40£30€36A$58C$56 an hour.
How to set it up
- List the membership or pricing page address for each rival you watch, 4 or 5 at most.
- In ChatGPT, ask: 'Every Monday morning, check these pages and tell me if any monthly price, joining fee or offer has changed since the last check. Quote the page each figure came from. If nothing has changed, say so in one line.'
- Open Scheduled to check the task's schedule, and choose push, email or both under Settings, Notifications.
- When it reports a change, open the rival's page yourself and confirm it before you react.
- Pause the task in quiet months and resume it before January and September.
What goes wrong
- Free runs tasks in a flexible window rather than at an exact time and allows 3 active tasks. Exact times need a paid plan such as Go (€8, about $9£7€8A$13C$13 a month).
- Many gyms only show prices part way through joining, or by location. If the page doesn't show a price, the task can't see it and may guess, so ask it to quote where each figure came from.
- Tasks can pause when inactive, or when the chat they belong to is archived or deleted. Check Scheduled once a month that it's still running.
- It reports what rivals charge, not what you should do. Match a price only if your own numbers allow it.
