The problem
A plumber with both hands in a crawl space can't answer the phone, and someone with water coming through the ceiling won't leave a voicemail; they call the next plumber. Miss 6 calls a week, and if a third of them were jobs worth $350£263€313A$505C$495 that's 2 jobs a week, about $3,000£2,256€2,684A$4,331C$4,241 a month, going to whoever answered.
What the AI does
Jobber's Receptionist answers calls and texts 24/7, books visits into your Jobber schedule, takes requests and escalates to you when a call needs a person. It's included on Jobber's Plus plan and is a $29£22€26A$42C$41 a month add-on on the others, so a one-truck plumber can add it to the Core plan. Every call becomes a visit or a request you can see in Jobber, instead of a missed-call notification you see three hours later.
A worked example
An illustrative example built from typical figures, not a named business.
A one-truck plumber in Chicago works alone most days and misses calls while on jobs, more in January when pipes freeze. They run Jobber Core for 1 user and add the Receptionist, forwarding unanswered calls to it, with frozen or burst pipes and active leaks set to escalate.
Before
About 6 missed calls a week, many lost to competitors
After
Every call answered, with 1 to 2 extra jobs a week booked at about $350£263€313A$505C$495 each
What it's worth
About $525£395€470A$758C$742 to $1,050£789€939A$1,516C$1,484 a month in profit, at an assumed 35% margin on $1,505£1,132€1,347A$2,173C$2,127 to $3,010£2,263€2,693A$4,345C$4,255 of extra work (1 to 2 more $350£263€313A$505C$495 jobs a week, times 4.3). That is against $58£44€52A$84C$82 to $78£59€70A$113C$110 a month: Jobber Core for 1 user ($29£22€26A$42C$41 billed yearly, $49£37€44A$71C$69 with no commitment) plus the $29£22€26A$42C$41 Receptionist add-on.
How to set it up
- Set up Jobber Core with your hours, service area, job types and the visit lengths you want it to book.
- Add the Receptionist ($29£22€26A$42C$41 a month on Core) and forward your unanswered and after-hours calls to it.
- Decide what it escalates to you straight away, such as active leaks, no water, sewage backups and gas smells (tell callers who smell gas to leave and call the gas utility).
- Tell it never to quote repair prices: a licensed plumber confirms the price on site, and it only books the visit or a stated service-call fee.
- Test it from another phone with a routine job, a burst pipe and a sales call, and read the summaries every evening for two weeks.
What goes wrong
- If your Jobber schedule isn't up to date, it books visits into time you've already filled.
- It answers texts too. Replying to someone who texted you is fine, but marketing texts need prior express written consent under the TCPA; ask Jobber how its texting number is registered for A2P 10DLC.
- Some callers hang up on anything automated. Check short and missed calls each evening and call them back.
- Extra Jobber users cost $29£22€26A$42C$41 a month each. If a helper needs the app, the price goes up.
