The problem
Coaches running several age groups need a fresh, age-appropriate plan for every session, and writing them each evening adds up. A coach writing 10 session plans a week can spend about 3 hours on it.
What the AI does
Give ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini the facts: age group, numbers, space and equipment, session length, the skill to work on and what the group did last week. Ask for a warm-up, two or three drills with progressions and a game, with timings. Read every plan against your governing body's coaching guidance and your own risk assessment, and change anything that doesn't suit the group. The assistant helps with wording and ideas; you decide what's safe and suitable. Never paste players' names, photos or medical details into it.
A worked example
A multi-sports coach in Plymouth runs 10 sessions a week for groups aged 5 to 14. On Sunday evening they draft the week's plans with an AI assistant from short notes, then edit them.
Before
About 3 hours a week writing session plans
After
About 1.5 hours a week drafting and editing; 1.5 hours saved
What it's worth
About $214£161€192A$309C$303 a month in time saved: 1.5 hours a week, times 4.3, is 6.45 hours a month at an assumed $33£25€30A$48C$47 an hour. The assistant costs nothing on a free plan or up to about $27£20€24A$38C$38 a month on a paid one.
How to set it up
- Write short notes for each session: age group, numbers, space, equipment, length and the skill to work on.
- Paste one session's notes into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and ask for a warm-up, drills with progressions and a game, with timings.
- Check each plan against your governing body's guidance for that age group and your risk assessment.
- Edit the plan into your own words and adjust for any player needs you know about, without putting them into the assistant.
- Keep the plans that worked in a folder and reuse them next term.
What goes wrong
- Assistants can suggest drills that are unsafe for the space, the age or the numbers. You check every plan before the session.
- Never paste players' names, photos, injuries or medical details into a consumer AI tool.
- Generic plans get stale. Give it last week's notes and what didn't work, or you'll get the same drills every week.
