The problem
In silage and harvest season a contractor is in the cab from dawn, often with ear defenders on and no signal in the bottom fields. Farmers ring round until someone answers. Miss 6 calls a week, and if 1 in 3 was a job worth $466£350€417A$672C$658 that's 2 jobs a week, about $3,990£3,000€3,570A$5,760C$5,640 a month, going to another contractor.
What the AI does
Jobber is job management software with an optional AI Receptionist. It answers calls and texts you don't, asks about the job and where the customer is, then books it using your online booking settings or takes a message. Every call is logged with a summary, transcript and recording, and calls mentioning keywords you choose are transferred to you or sent as a text alert. For weather-dependent work, leave online booking off so it takes the details and you ring the farmer back to agree the day. It's included on Jobber's Plus plan or available as a $29 (about $29£22€26A$42C$41) monthly add-on.
A worked example
A contractor in Cumbria runs 2 tractors with the owner and one operator through silage season. The owner misses about 6 calls a week while mowing or wrapping, and farmers who don't get through ring the next contractor.
Before
About 6 missed calls a week, many from farmers who then ring someone else
After
Every call answered and summarized, with an assumed 1 to 2 extra jobs a week kept, worth about $466£350€417A$672C$658 to $931£700€833A$1,344C$1,316 a week
What it's worth
About $601£452€538A$868C$850 to $1,201£903€1,075A$1,734C$1,698 a month in profit through the season, at an assumed 30% margin on $2,002£1,505€1,791A$2,890C$2,829 to $4,003£3,010€3,582A$5,779C$5,659 of extra work (1 to 2 jobs a week at $466£350€417A$672C$658 times 4.3). That is against $59£44€52A$84C$83 to $128£96€114A$184C$180 for Jobber with the AI Receptionist: Core at $29 (about $29£22€26A$42C$41) plus the $29 add-on, up to Connect at $99 (about $98£74€88A$142C$139) plus the add-on. The extra jobs are an assumption; check the call log for how many were real work.
How to set it up
- Sign up for Jobber and set your working hours, service area and the jobs you do, such as mowing, baling, wrapping and slurry.
- Add the AI Receptionist (included on Plus, or a $29, about $29£22€26A$42C$41 monthly add-on) and divert unanswered calls to it.
- Choose keywords that transfer the call or send you a text alert, such as 'breakdown', 'today' or a big customer's farm name.
- Leave online booking off for weather-dependent work, so it takes the details and you ring back to agree the day.
- Read the call summaries each evening for the first fortnight and adjust the settings wherever it got things wrong.
What goes wrong
- Some farmers hang up on anything automated. Tell regular customers what to expect before the season starts.
- It can't judge whether ground is fit or how long a job will take; you still confirm every job yourself.
- Check with Jobber which plans the add-on works with before committing. Prices are in dollars, so the pound cost moves with the exchange rate.
- With no signal in the field, transferred calls won't reach you either; the text alerts are what you'll see when you're back in range.
