The problem
Feedback on a cut arrives as email lists of timecodes. If a producer has 8 projects with 3 review rounds each and spends 30 minutes turning scattered feedback into a list, that's 24 rounds, 720 minutes, 12 hours a month.
What the AI does
Frame.io is a review and approval platform. Upload the cut, share a link and clients comment on the video where they want a change. The pricing page says external reviewers don't need accounts. The homepage says it can generate searchable transcripts and captions. Free allows 2 members, 2 projects and 2GB, which is too small for video work, so Pro (up to 5 members, 2TB) is the realistic starting plan. The editor works through the comments and replies.
A worked example
A video production company in Glasgow has 8 projects on the go with about 3 review rounds each. Three editors share the work.
Before
24 rounds at 30 minutes of collecting and listing feedback each: 720 minutes, 12 hours a month
After
If comments sit on the video and each round takes about 10 minutes to sort: 240 minutes, 4 hours a month
What it's worth
About 8 hours a month saved (480 minutes), worth about £320 at £40 an hour, if clients really comment on the platform (an assumption to test with one client). Cost: Pro is $15 (about £11) per member a month, so 3 editors is $45, about £34. The page says annual billing saves 13% but lists no annual prices. Prices in dollars plus tax.
How to set it up
- Try the Free plan with one small project to see how a client uses the review link.
- Count the members who upload and edit; Pro is priced per member and covers up to 5.
- Upload each cut, set the share link options (the page lists passphrase and expiry) and send it with a deadline for comments.
- Collect the comments, resolve them in the next cut and upload the new version.
- Get final approval in writing outside the platform.
What goes wrong
- Unreleased footage is sensitive. Use passphrase and expiry options and think about who can see the link.
- Clients may keep sending notes by email. Say in your process that comments go on the video.
- The Free plan's 2GB and 2 projects won't cover real production work.
- Price is per member; adding assistants or freelancers adds to the monthly cost.
